Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has shown off ventilators that it has built from parts used for its Model 3 to help combat the coronavirus and address the shortage of the vital piece of medical equipment.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been one of the many in the auto industry to come out in solidarity to help fight the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, and promised to manufacture ventilators following a plea for its help from New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio. In this video, posted to its YouTube channel, it shows two versions of the ventilator constructed from a number of parts including Tesla vehicle components and medical components.
A masked Tesla engineer introduces the work at its engineering lab saying: “We’re trying to make some ventilators out of some car parts so we can help out the medical industry without taking away from their supply.”
The engineers then talk through the ventilator describing how some of its Model 3 vehicle controllers are incorporated into the equipment, as well as the car’s infotainment touchscreen used to control it and display a patient’s vital signals.
