UK Power Networks has published a new ‘insiders’ guide’ to streamline the process of designing and installing EV chargepoint hubs, addressing the complexities involved in connecting these facilities to the electricity grid.
The guide focuses specifically on land consents required before applying for grid connection, a crucial step that can significantly impact project timelines. With the distribution network operator receiving approximately 100 applications annually for EV charging hub connections – some requiring up to 3MVA of power, equivalent to supplying over 2,000 homes – the need for clarity in the process has become evident.
The comprehensive online resource outlines the necessary hierarchy of consents and presents four common scenarios to help developers relate the information to their specific projects.
“Having the correct access and licensing arrangements can dramatically speed up the connections process, enabling sites to be up and running in weeks rather than months,” said Neil Madgwick, head of connections service delivery at UK Power Networks.
The company offers a comprehensive service to manage the final connection to the local electricity grid, working alongside operators and independent connections providers from initial site design through to energization.
Madgwick added, “This helps ensure that they can take advantage of our innovative products so they stay in control and don’t need complex leases and wayleaves.”
The guide – available here – represents part of a growing library of resources being developed by UK Power Networks as interest in low-carbon technologies continues to expand across various sectors.
