Škoda Auto has manufactured its millionth battery system at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic, marking a milestone for the Czech automaker’s electric vehicle program. The company began producing high-voltage traction batteries in September 2019 for the Superb iV plug-in hybrid, before transitioning to larger batteries for fully electric vehicles on the MEB platform in May 2022. Two assembly lines now produce 1,500 units daily.
“Reaching the milestone of one million battery systems testifies to the dedication of our team and collaboration among different brands,” said Andreas Dick, Škoda Auto Board Member for Production and Logistics. “Construction of an additional battery system facility in Mladá Boleslav is already underway.”
The batteries, with capacities from 55 to 91 kWh, power the Škoda Enyaq and Elroq, along with other Volkswagen Group vehicles from Volkswagen, Seat/Cupra and Audi brands. The milestone coincides with the launch of ‘Enter Electric!’, the group’s e-mobility information hub. In 2023, Škoda added a second assembly line at the facility, where 90 employees per shift work alongside 82 automated robots in a 10,500-square-meter production area. The plant completes one MEB battery every 60 seconds, with each unit weighing approximately 490 kilograms.
The company has trained more than 28,000 employees in electromobility skills. The lithium-ion batteries use a modular design with 8 to 13 modules containing 16 to 26 cells each. This June, Škoda opened a tomographic center for quality control, using computed tomography to examine internal components down to 4 microns without disassembly. The system can also analyze cells that have been in operation.
