PowerCo SE, a leading battery manufacturer, has announced a strategic partnership with the International Research School for Battery Chemistry, Characterisation, Analysis, Recycling and Application (BACCARA) at the University of Münster. This collaboration aims to support battery research and education, crucial for the competitiveness of Germany’s automotive industry.
PowerCo SE will finance BACCARA’s research programme and doctoral positions over the next three years. The partnership will also offer students practical experience through expert lectures and on-site projects. Established in Salzgitter in 2022, PowerCo focuses on innovation and scientific advancement.
“Our goal is to make the battery cell a key technology in Germany and Europe,” said Sebastian Krapoth, Chief Human Resources Officer of PowerCo. “Collaborating with Münster ensures that talented individuals can train and remain in Germany, supporting strong battery research to compete globally.”
Prof. Dr. Martin Winter, scientific director at BACCARA, highlighted the focus on optimizing lithium-ion batteries, developing solid-state batteries, and exploring lithium-free alternatives like sodium-ion batteries. He emphasized the need for diverse battery technologies to meet future market demands.
The BACCARA research school trains 45 doctoral students, providing workshops on intercultural communication, programming languages, and other skills valuable for their careers. The programme involves over 30 researchers, ensuring top-level education and training.
Funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia and the University of Münster since 2020, BACCARA now relies heavily on external support due to reduced federal funding. Prof. Dr. Winter expressed gratitude for PowerCo’s support, which secures high-level research and industry connections in Münster.
“The energy transition presents significant challenges,” said Dr. Julia Quante, BACCARA’s Managing Director. “By offering industry-oriented doctoral training, this cooperation with PowerCo is both visionary and promising.”
PowerCo, founded by the Volkswagen Group, develops and produces battery cells, with three factories in Germany, Spain, and Canada. The collaboration with BACCARA ensures continued advancements in battery technology, contributing to the energy transition and automotive innovation.
