New automotive brand Omoda will launch its award-winning electric Omoda E5 flagship model with an advanced lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. With a capacity of 61 kWh, the LFP battery has been engineered to offer the optimal balance of range, performance and cost, together with enhanced durability and sustainability compared to more commonly used lithium-ion battery chemistries such as nickel-cobalt-manganese. Omoda will be providing an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery pack.
Nickel and cobalt are critical materials that are in very high demand and are costly to produce. By comparison, the materials within LFP batteries are less expensive, with simpler and more transparent supply chains. They’re also tolerant of repeated high-power charging. Because of this, Omoda say the E5 will offer customers a desirable yet attainable choice when they make the switch to electric.
The E5 comes with a 61 kWh LFP battery pack, and a single motor driving the front axle that develops 204 hp (150 kW) and 340 Nm torque. This combination delivers strong acceleration – 0 to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds – together with a range of up to 280 miles (WLTP). Capable of 120 kW (DC) rapid charging, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% can take as little as 30 minutes. The powerful 11 kW on-board charger enables fast and convenient home charging.
“Our decision to use LFP batteries reflects our commitment to providing a cost-effective, durable, and environmentally sustainable EV in the shape of our flagship Omoda E5,” said Mr. Chen Chunqing, Omoda CEO. “We believe that by making electric vehicles more accessible and efficient, we can accelerate the transition to cleaner mobility, contributing to improved air quality and reduced carbon emissions. By prioritising transparency, performance, and a commitment to meeting customer needs, OMODA aims to accelerate the transition to electric mobility and contribute to a greener future.”
The Omoda E5 will arrive in UK showrooms from April this year, with pricing and full specifications to be announced soon.
