Omoda & Jaecoo has introduced its new Super Hybrid System (SHS) to the UK market, with the Jaecoo 7 SUV being the first model to feature the technology. The system, developed by parent company Chery Group, claims to achieve 403 mpg and a total range of 745 miles.
The Jaecoo 7 SHS combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 143 bhp with an electric powertrain, delivering a total system output of 347 bhp and 525 Nm of torque, with acceleration from 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds.
“The rapid growth of new energy vehicles is set to continue, and plug-in hybrids are a key part of this expansion around the world,” said Peter Matkin, chief engineer at Jaecoo and head of engineering for Chery Group. “The SHS enables an improved driving experience and better fuel economy, helped by a unique engineering solution. Jaecoo engineers have worked tirelessly to fine-tune Chery’s CDM hybrid technology to offer a truly viable alternative to a pure electric vehicle.”
The system features an 18.3 kW lithium iron phosphate battery pack, providing an electric-only range of 56 miles. According to Omoda & Jaecoo, the hybrid system maintains battery charge and prevents it from dropping to zero percent, distinguishing it from traditional plug-in hybrids.
Key features of the powertrain include a fifth-generation petrol engine with Miller cycle technology, intelligent thermal management, and efficient turbocharging. The hybrid transmission incorporates quad-core dual electronic control and high-efficiency dual motors.
The Jaecoo 7 will be available with either petrol or plug-in hybrid powertrains, with prices starting from £29,435 for the petrol version and £35,065 for the SHS model. The vehicle comes with a 60-litre fuel tank and will be offered in both front- and four-wheel-drive configurations. Omoda & Jaecoo plans to announce additional models featuring the SHS drivetrain in the coming months.
