Ford will extend its research into the use of plug-in hybrid vans in urban areas by expanding its Transit Custom PHEV fleet to include Valencia, Spain.
The Spanish trial of the vehicle – which uses a 1-liter EcoBoost engine as a range extender for the electric drivetrain – will be used to assess how the Transit Custom PHEV fleet could contribute to improved air quality and, Ford says, enhanced productivity.
“At Ford, we are committed to tackling urban mobility challenges, moving people and delivering goods and services through innovation and technology,” said Steven Armstrong, group vice president and CEO of Ford of Europe, Middle East & Africa.
“As no two cities are alike, it is vital that we look at the mobility issue from a variety of perspectives. Our research in Valencia will help us gain a meaningful understanding of the benefits that small and medium fleets running primarily on electric power can bring.”
