In a significant move towards greener transportation, Norway has unveiled its first public charging site dedicated exclusively to electric trucks. Located in Oslo, the site is a collaborative effort between Kempower, Wennstrom, and Fastcharge, marking a crucial step in the country’s transition to e-mobility in the heavy vehicle sector.
The charging site, which opened on July 25, offers up to 400kW of power per charging point, utilizing Kempower’s advanced DC fast-charging solutions. This initiative aligns with Norway’s ambitious goal to have all new trucks sold in the country be electric by 2030, addressing the 17% of greenhouse gas emissions currently attributed to road transportation.
“Offering public, on-the-move charging for trucks that is reliable, scalable, and user-friendly is critical for the adoption of electrical trucks,” says Erik Kanerva, Sales Director of Northern Europe at Kempower. “This pioneering truck charging project with Fastcharge and Wennstrom is a great step forward for the electrification of transport in Norway.”
Fastcharge, the site’s operator, plans to open three more public truck charging sites across Norway by year-end, with additional locations in Ringsaker, Sandefjord, Gjesdal, Bergen, and Malvik. “We aim to be the natural choice for transportation companies by offering a premium service,” says Harald Grytten, CEO at Fastcharge, “And at the same time facilitating the transition to electrification of the transportation fleet with reduced total cost of ownership.”
The site features Kempower’s modularly scalable converter cabinet solution, capable of delivering up to 600kW of total charging power. Its design allows for future compatibility with Kempower’s Megawatt Charging System (MCS), anticipating the needs of next-generation electric trucks.
“Our commitment and dedication to creating reliable, scalable and user-friendly truck charging stations reflects our shared vision for sustainable transportation,” says Joakim Opsahl, Head of Sales at Wennstrom. “Together we pave the way toward a greener future.”
This pioneering initiative not only provides essential infrastructure for Norway’s growing electric truck fleet but also sets a precedent for similar projects across Europe, potentially accelerating the continent’s shift towards sustainable heavy-duty transportation.
