PSA and Nidec have announced the establishment of Nidec-PSA emotors, a joint venture dedicated to the design, development, manufacture and sale of electric traction motors. The agreement was formalized by MM Shigenobu Nagamori, CEO of Nidec, and Carlos Tavares, CEO of Groupe PSA.
Forty engineers have already been recruited and joined the JV headquarters in Carrières sous Poissy, near Paris, France. By the end of this summer, 30 more engineers are expected to join the site, which features a dedicated R&D area.
The team will design new traction electric motors, which will be produced at PSA’s Tremery plant, in Moselle, France. The new motors will be integrated in mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full-electric vehicles.
In an acknowledgment of the important role of high-performance traction motors in development of future powertrains, the two groups will invest €220m (US$258m) to set-up the joint venture. These funds will support PSA’s electrification strategy – that 100% of the Groupe PSA vehicle range will include an electrified offering by 2025.
