BorgWarner has secured contracts to supply electric motors to three major Chinese automakers, marking a significant expansion of its presence in China’s EV market.
The automotive supplier will provide 400V high-voltage hairpin motors for a 200kW hybrid rear-drive platform, with production set to begin in August 2025. The company will also manufacture motors for a 150kW pure electric platform, scheduled to start production in March 2026. Two additional contracts cover electric motors for range-extended and plug-in hybrid vehicles, with production planned for August and October 2025.
“We are pleased to extend our success in China with several new electric motor business wins for a variety of hybrid and electric applications,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. “We are dedicated to continuously innovating our technology and improving our manufacturing processes to deliver high-quality products and services to meet the evolving needs of new energy vehicle customers.”
To support these contracts, BorgWarner has developed a new electric motor technology called Ultra Short High Voltage Hairpin (S-HVH). The system features shortened end turns that reduce the motor’s overall length by more than 5mm compared to traditional designs. This modification decreases axial volume while increasing power density and reducing copper usage.
The S-HVH technology is compatible with existing production lines and can be implemented through standard factory upgrades. The system works with both 400V and 800V platforms, making it suitable for various EV models.
