In a landmark moment for sustainable transportation in South America, Argentina’s first domestically manufactured electric bus has begun operations in Buenos Aires. The MT17.0e, featuring cutting-edge electric drivetrain technology from UK-based Equipmake, is now serving passengers on Line 28, connecting the Liniers and Retiro neighborhoods.
Developed as part of the Advanced Propulsion Centre-funded CELEB (Cost Effective Low Entry Bus) scheme, the MT17.0e is the result of a five-year international collaboration led by Equipmake. The project aimed to create an affordable electric bus tailored for the South American market.
“We are delighted that DOTA S.A has put this pioneering electric bus into operation in Buenos Aires,” Ian Foley, CEO of Equipmake, “This is Argentina’s first domestically manufactured e-bus and, together with our partners Agrale and Todo Bus, Equipmake is playing a key role in the acceleration of Buenos Aires’ mission to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and become entirely carbon-neutral by 2050.”
The MT17.0e boasts impressive technical specifications, including Equipmake’s HTM 3500 motor, which delivers 3,500Nm of torque and a peak power output of 400kW. The bus is powered by a 318kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a range of up to 155 miles (250km) on a single charge. Recharging takes 5-7 hours using a CSS2 DC charging point.
Foley highlighted the potential impact of their technology: “We’re hugely excited about the transformative potential of our technology and the benefits it will bring to Buenos Aires and beyond in the years to come. Now that the vehicle has demonstrated it has met its performance targets in service, we hope to begin supplying Agrale in the short term to meet growing South American demand.”
The introduction of this electric bus aligns with Buenos Aires’ ambitious climate goals and marks a significant step towards sustainable public transportation in the region. As DOTA S.A plans to expand its electric fleet, the MT17.0e could pave the way for a greener future in Argentina’s capital and beyond.
