Alpine has revealed an updated version of its Alpenglow concept car, now featuring a powerful hydrogen-combustion engine. The Alpenglow Hy6, first introduced as a concept in 2022, showcases Alpineās commitment to sustainable high-performance vehicles and potential future motorsport applications.
The new prototype is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine developed specifically for hydrogen combustion. This powerplant produces 740 bhp, more than doubling the output of the previous 340 bhp 4-cylinder version. The engine revs up to 9,000 rpm and enables a top speed exceeding 330 km/h.
āWe are demonstrating our commitment to hydrogen research, which could herald motorsport applications with high-performance levels,ā said Bruno Famin, VP Alpine Motorsports. āThe Alpenglow Hy6 concept is the perfect example of what is possible to achieve the essential step of reducing carbon emissions in motorsport.ā
The Alpenglow Hy6 features several design updates to accommodate its new powertrain. The rear section has been redesigned, with the engine now visible through blue-tinted glass. New air intakes and ventilation systems have been incorporated to ensure proper cooling and safety for the hydrogen engine.
āVarious elements of the conceptās design are evolving,ā said Antony Villain, VP Alpine Design, āSculpted by the aerodynamic imperatives implied by its new performance, while visually evoking both speed and the virtuous aspects of hydrogen.ā
The concept utilizes three hydrogen tanks, each storing 2.1 kg of gaseous hydrogen at 700 bars of pressure. Safety measures include Regulation 134 certified composite cylinders, rapid fuel evacuation valves, and constant hydrogen presence monitoring.
Alpineās choice of a hydrogen combustion engine over a fuel cell system aims to maintain a driving experience similar to traditional race cars while reducing emissions. The company is also exploring liquid hydrogen storage solutions for improved integration and faster refueling.
This development aligns with potential future motorsport regulations, as the ACO and FIA plan to allow hydrogen-powered cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2028. The Alpenglow Hy6 represents Alpineās vision for sustainable high-performance vehicles and demonstrates the companyās innovative approach to meeting future automotive challenges.
