EES South America

28th August 2018 - 30th August 2018

EES South America is an industry event for suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and users of stationary and mobile electrical energy storage solutions. It will be hosted for the second time at Intersolar South America, taking place at the Expo Center Norte in São Paulo.Covering the entire value chain of innovative battery and energy storage technologies – from components and production to specific user application – it is the ideal platform for all stakeholders in the rapidly growing energy storage market. The focus at EES is on energy storage solutions suited to energy systems with increasing amounts of renewable energy sources attracting investors, utilities, installers, manufacturers and project developers from all over the world.

Energy storage systems set to change the industry

The market potential for battery storage systems is huge – whether for homeowners, in grid systems or as large-scale storage systems in commercial or industrial use. According to a study by the market research company Navigant Research, worldwide revenue from decentralized energy storage systems will grow from US$452m in 2014 to over US$16.5bn by 2024, and the market is set to reach a volume of over 10GW.

Industry experts expect the storage market to be worth billions of dollars within just a few years.

Storage systems are most profitable in countries with favorable conditions for self consumption.

Photovoltaic storage systems drive development forward

According to the World Energy Storage Markets Report, the most interesting photovoltaic storage markets are found in regions, such as Germany and California, where on-site consumption of solar power is profitable due to grid parity or other favorable conditions. Even small changes in feed-in tariffs and electricity prices promise significant improvements in economic viability for numerous other markets around the world.

The massive expansion in household storage systems heralds the start of a structural change which holds new challenges for the energy industry and energy policymakers alike. New regulatory frameworks are necessary, and it is essential that suppliers’ business models evolve away from predominantly selling electricity and incorporate the provision of broader energy services.

South America offers one of the five highest solar potentials in the world. In the long-term, a high share of solar energy in the region, together with other renewable energy sources like hydro, wind and geothermal energy, will impose challenges on the power system. These challenges will be addressed with storage technologies, smart transmission systems and demand side management (DSM).

The high penetration of renewables that is envisaged in future power systems of South America will significantly increase the need for flexible operational measures and generation technologies, whose associated investment decisions have to be properly planned in the long-term. In Chile for example the electricity sector is already deploying battery storage as a spinning reserve. In the residential, commercial and industrial segments, the market players are looking for market-ready energy storage solutions.
