Audi will reveal hybrid variants of the A8, A7 Sportback, A6 and Q5 as plug-in models at the Geneva International Motor Show. All models will be capable of electric ranges over 40km (25 miles) on WLTP. As part of Audi’s expansion of its electrified range, the PHEVs see the OEM increase its hybrid model offering significantly.
The hybrid powertrains use Audi’s turbocharged petrol ICE in concert with an electric motor integrated in the transmission. A 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery beneath the luggage compartment floor stores the electrical energy for the system – the e-motor supports the ICE during acceleration.
The drivetrain also uses elements of the Audi e-tron’s all-electric technology, and is capable of recovering up to 80kW of energy under braking.
The electric motor handles slight decelerations, with the hydraulic wheel brakes assisting when deceleration measures more than 0.4g.
The Li-ion battery consists of 104 punch cells, combined into eight modules – however, in the Q5, the battery comprises prismatic cells with the same capacity.
The cooling circuit of the battery is integrated into the low-temperature circuit – responsible for supplying power to the electric motor and the power electronics.
