Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer has announced plans to launch an entry-level EV priced at approximately €20,000, with production scheduled to begin in 2027. The announcement came during a works meeting at the company’s Wolfsburg headquarters, where employees were given an early look at the vehicle’s design.
“With the results of the negotiations in December, we have embarked on the largest future plan in the history of Volkswagen,” said Schäfer. “This will be a key step in making electro-mobility attractive for everyone – the clear goal of our brand.”
The company plans to unveil a show car version of the new entry-level model to the public in March. The vehicle will be part of a new electric small car family developed within the Volkswagen Group, alongside the ID. 2all, which is set to launch in 2026 at a price point below €25,000.
The Wolfsburg plant will remain central to Volkswagen’s EV strategy. Following the relocation of Golf production to Mexico, the facility will be retooled to produce the electric Golf successor and the electric T-Roc on the company’s new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform).
“The Wolfsburg plant has a clear perspective for the future,” Schäfer said. “We intend to produce the electric Golf successor on the new SSP platform there, as well as the high-volume electric T-Roc. This way, we will be making Wolfsburg the capital of our new all-electric compact class.”
Daniela Cavallo, Chairperson of the General and Group Works Council, emphasized the importance of the transformation: “The future electric flagships – the Golf and the T-Roc produced in Wolfsburg – currently represent a volume in excess of 500,000 units per year. The main plant has therefore secured a highly attractive vehicle segment.”
The announcements follow Volkswagen’s December 2024 agreement with employee representatives, which outlined a vision combining economic stability, employment, and technology leadership. The company aims to become the leading volume manufacturer in sustainable mobility by 2030.
Volkswagen has already established a significant presence in the EV market, having sold more than 1.35 million ID vehicles worldwide since the launch of the ID family in 2019. This includes approximately 500,000 ID.3 models, with total electric vehicle sales reaching 383,100 units last year.
