SOLiTHOR, a solid-state battery developer, has achieved significant milestones in battery technology that could accelerate electric transformation for aviation and maritime sectors.
In breakthrough testing, SOLiTHOR’s lithium metal solid-state battery (SSB) prototypes demonstrated remarkable performance, completing 1,000 full charge-discharge cycles with a coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.2 percent. The tests, conducted at moderate temperature and controlled external pressure, exceeded commercial performance targets.
The company’s innovative technology combines a thin proprietary solid electrolyte with lithium metal and high-loading cathodes, achieving unprecedented energy densities of 384 watt-hours per kilogram and 1,026 watt-hours per liter at the stack level.
“Research over many decades has sought to reach such cyclability for thin lithium metal battery technologies, and we are among the few companies to have demonstrated it in a solid-state configuration,” said Dr. Fanny Bardé, SOLiTHOR’s Chief Technology Officer.
A key advantage of the new technology is its compatibility with existing lithium-ion battery production lines, potentially enabling rapid industrialization with minimal additional cost. The company has already manufactured 3Ah pouch cell prototypes and plans to submit them for external validation with industry partners.
“Aviation and maritime vessels require high power and high energy to provide the necessary electrification to safely transport aircraft and ships over longer distances,” said Huw Hampson-Jones, SOLiTHOR’s CEO. “The achievements demonstrate our capability.”
The breakthrough addresses critical challenges in electric transportation, offering lighter, safer, and more powerful battery solutions particularly crucial for take-off and landing operations. Unlike current battery technologies, SOLiTHOR’s approach promises superior energy density and long-term cycling stability.
The company is currently focused on partnering with battery manufacturers to scale production for aviation and maritime clients, positioning itself at the forefront of electric transportation technology.
